Epitaphium is a slow, somber piece for solo trumpet and chamber orchestra. It is composed using a fairly dissonant harmonic language, but has very few technical difficulties for anyone, including the solo trumpet. If you have a good trumpeter you would like to feature in a piece that is definitely not a toe-tapper, this might work for you. The soloist will deal with some challenging intervallic leaps and unusual rhythms. The woodwind section has some soloistic passages, as well. The instrumentation is: Solo trumpet, pairs of flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, and horns, and strings.
