FREE Music Teacher Newsletter & FREE Music Program Report

"Music Conducting Tips; Stop Wasting Time & Start Playing More Music"

Do you despise wasting time? I do too. So with my 'inside connections ' I convinced Carl that he should pry some of his hard won music teaching wisdom out of his brain and put it down for the rest of us to benefit from. Not only that but I convinced him he should do it for free. (I LOVE FREE!)

Like you I have been out in the trenches trying to get good rehearsals out of less than enthusiastic music program participants. Teaching conditions, music budgets and materials were often subterranean. How about attempting to balance work, music teaching and having a good life? Yep, like you I've been handling that one for a while too.

Carl Hammond's credits include conducting bands and orchestras, teaching music, performing on piano & trombone, musical composing, and arranging music on a worldwide stage. And he's done it for over 40 years, so there are definitely some things he can share that could make life better for the rest of the band music, jazz music, and music teaching population.

With that idea we will semi-regularly issue a free musically useful Newsletter and occasional free Report for you. If this appeals to you hit the button above and snippets of good usable music teaching advice will magically appear in your emailbox.

Carl Hammond

....divides his time on an international stage between the US, Chile and other interesting compass points.

Currently he is in Santiago, Chile having a fabulous time. He is a professor at ProJazz Instituto Internacionál de Música where he directs the big band, the Jazz choir and teaches classes in theory and musicianship.

Before his recent move to Chile, he was working too hard as the Head of the Music Dept for the prestigious Coronado School of the Arts in San Diego, director of the concert band program at Palomar College, and a presenter with SouthCAP, The Southern California Arts Project. He was also simultaneously an adjunct professor at San Diego City College and Southwestern College. He also directed the concert band, stage band, and brass choir with the San Diego Youth Symphony. Since his wife coudln't find a way to clone him so she could see him occasionally they have moved and relaxed a bit.

Recently in addition to sampling excellent Chilean wines and food he has been back to composing and arranging the music for a variety of projects including jazz singers, jazz charts, classical works and music for a series of educational videos. (Years of hard work for a musician apparently lead to more hard work, but in his case nicer grub.)

At San Diego City College he exercised his hard won knowledge of music technology gained through years of composing and growing through the fledgling industry's pains. He taught the Music Technology course entitled “The Electronic Music Studio”, the Jazz Improvisation class, and he was also the director and conductor of the musical theater program.

Being actively involved in various forms of composition and arranging, using the computer led to his works being performed globally. Compositions include works for orchestra, concert band, jazz ensemble, choir, chamber music and music for the theater. Carl's composing and arranging in the jazz and pop areas led to first prize in the Australia wide composition competition sponsored by the Jazz Action Society. The piece, "Lagrimas de Alegria" (Tears of Joy) for stage band is now available on the website and we are working hard to expand our jazz, chamber, string and choral offerings.

Drop us a note detailing works you have copyright to that you would like to see in the catalog--we give a generous split

After many arrangements and compositions were published by various companies Carl decided to get serious about publishing his works himself.(Because the composer's cut from the industry is lousy!) For seven years in Australia, Scamp Publications marketed a catalogue of educational concert band and ensemble music for all levels of expertise. As a result a number of school and community ensembles requested Carl to work with them as guest soloist or conductor. These pieces have often appeared as test pieces in local and state music festivals and have ultimately led to the current project, Musical Compositions.net. After many years in the field Carl understands the challenges and difficulties faced by music educators trying to achieve good music under trying circumstances. Hopefully this site will offer you some help.
